navigating healthcare in the UK

essential tips for international students and how Bright World can help

all about your child's health

When sending their child to study in the UK, parents need to know that they have access to proper healthcare as a top priority.

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) provides comprehensive medical care, but understanding how it works and what’s required can be confusing.

At Bright World, we not only help parents navigate the healthcare system but also provide essential guardianship services to compliment those of their boarding school, to ensure they’re supported in every aspect of their well-being.

understanding the NHS: what parents need to know

NHS

The National Health Service (NHS) provides healthcare for all UK residents, including international students. When applying for a visa, a contributory fee, known as the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), is required. This covers NHS services during your child's stay in the UK.

  • Costs: The IHS fee is £776 per year. If your child’s stay is less than six months, the fee is waived unless applying from within the UK, in which case it’s £388.

the importance of registering with a GP (doctor)

Doctor

One of the first steps after arrival is registering with a General Practitioner (GP). This is crucial as the GP becomes the primary healthcare provider for your child. The GP provides general medical services, referrals to specialists, and access to prescription medications. Your boarding school or university should assist you with this but if you have any questions or if you need any assistance in attending a Doctor then the Bright World Guardianship Care Team is here to help.

  • What a GP Offers: Routine check-ups, treatment for minor illnesses, and referrals to specialists.

enhancing NHS coverage with private medical insurance

Even with NHS coverage, private medical insurance can be beneficial. It offers quicker access to specialists and treatments, providing an extra layer of security and peace of mind.

For students studying in the UK for less than six months, private medical insurance is advisable. While the NHS will cover emergencies, having private insurance ensures access to comprehensive care.
